Ultrasound Bioeffects Paradigm

1966 - 1972

During this period, biomedical acoustics concentrated on two intertwined directions: diagnostic imaging and safety-focused biophysics. Ultrasound enabled in vivo visualization of intracranial structures and peripheral organs with omnidirectional scanning and computer-assisted display, and investigations into nonthermal mechanisms and threshold dosages clarified how exposure governs lesion formation. Advances in instrumentation, measurement science, and foundational acoustics underpinned experimentation with wave–tissue interactions, resonance effects, and molecular-scale responses to ultrasound.

Imaging and visualization: ultrasound enabled in vivo visualization of intracranial features (ventricles, cisterns, sulci) and peripheral organs, with omnidirectional scanning and computer-assisted display, demonstrating early brain and organ imaging capabilities [2], [1], [5], [6], [16].

Biophysical safety and nonthermal effects: research on nonthermal mechanisms, threshold dosages for brain lesions, and heat role in lesion formation, outlining exposure limits and mechanisms [4], [9], [10], [19].

Instrumentation and measurement science: development of transcutaneous blood-velocity meters, immersion scanners for 2D breast imaging, velocity measurements in water, and resonance-based sensitivity enhancements and diffractive field considerations [18], [15], [3], [14], [12].

Foundational physical acoustics and materials: focusing of microwave acoustic beams and elastic/photoelastic properties of crystals, underscoring wave propagation and acousto-optical interactions in solid media [7], [11].

Molecular and cellular responses to ultrasound: volume changes between conformers and degradation of macromolecules under ultrasound exposure, highlighting nonthermal molecular-scale effects [8], [19].
